New! Links to Reading Lists Online and Subject Guides are now on the Student Portal

October 10, 2017

student portal

It is now possible to link to both Reading Lists Online AND Subject Guides from the Student Portal; look for the two icons above.

This seems like a good opportunity to talk about both of these services. Let’s take Reading Lists Online first of all. Reading Lists Online is exactly “what is says on the tin” (no apologies for the cliché there…!): reading lists, that are online. What’s the benefit of this? Quite aside from the fact that your reading lists are absolutely essential to your studies, an online reading list ensures that you can access your list wherever you are, and you can even link to online material from that list. Not only can you link to electronic books and journals, you can also find links to services such as Discover@Bolton, your Subject Guide and even important websites. Simply search for your module code and your list will be accessible. We are working on integrating Reading Lists Online in Moodle so this process will hopefully be simpler – watch this space!

So to Subject Guides. One of the questions we get quite regularly is “Where do I start?”, and actually, that’s a really good question: where should you start?! An excellent starting point is the Subject Guide for your course. Use the guide to access information about access resources, explanations and links to the best electronic resources for your studies, links to referencing, using the Library, accessing Inter-Library Loans and access to Discover@Bolton.

February 3, 2015

Hooray! Apologies for the inconvenience caused while we worked to get to the bottom of the problem. Sage/OUP access issues off-campus

January 27, 2015

And another one… We have hit upon a problem with off-campus access to Sage and OUP. When you find the article you wish to read and click on “Login via your institution” you may see a message to tell you that this particular type of authentication is not set up for this institution. This has been reported, and it is hoped it will be resolved as soon as possible. Again, apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Login issues with ScienceDirect

January 26, 2015

I think it’s safe to say that January 2015 has been one of the busier months for a while in terms of resource access issues…! This time, we seem to be experiencing issues with logging in with ScienceDirect. It has come to light that once you have logged in via the University of Bolton electronic resources login page, an additional screen can be seen which asks you to chose your institution. The screen that you will see looks like this:

sd 26.1.15It would appear that you can close the window and proceed as normal. It is not known when this appeared, but other universities have reported a similar issue, and have been in contact with the provide for further advice. So, in the meantime, if you see this box appear, just close the box by clicking on the cross in the top right-hand corner of this pop-up. Failing, that follow the link to “University of Bolton” until you are taken to the resource.

Apologies for this rather bizarre issue (it’s a new one for me, too!) and keep checking this blog for further news. If you have any difficulties in accessing electronic resources, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Subject Help Desk, either by e-mail, by phone on 01204 903404 or in person.
